Terminology
The the exam, terminology is key to getting high marks like in most exams. In media there are lots of essential terminology that you need to know clearly before going into the exam, with out it, you will struggle to gain marks.
Some of the key words to use in the exam for TV comedy are things like;
*Binary Opposite - The ways opposites are used to create interest in media texts.
*Stereotype - Representation of people or groups by a few characteristics.
*Watershed - The set time at which the adult programmes which may contain rude/violent things is allowed to be shown.
*Institute - A large media corporation or company
*Stripped schedule - This is when a show is running on television at the same time daily.
*Antagonist - The character whose function in a plot is to oppose the protagonist
*CGI - Computer Generated Imagery, refers to the (usally) 3-D effects
*Convention - The widely recognised way of doing something - this has to do with content
*Protagonist - The character who drives the narrative forward, though the choices they make and actions they take
All of the terminology are the most common ones used in exams.

Media Revision - Camera
Camera Shots
There are many different camera angles which are used in shooting films and TV shows, the idea of different camera angles is to give more effect in the show, e,g; a close up shot used to show the intensity of a situation or a extra long shot to represent the actors authority in the situation at because it shows him/her as a small object in a big background that would represent how little power he has over the enemy. The most common types of camera shots used in most films/shows today are;
-Wide shot
The wide shot can be used to show the person and to give an idea about what it is about.
-Mid shot
The mid shows enough detail to be able to remove the bottom half of the person and to show the characters body language which would suggest a certain thing to the audience, eg; in this photo it shows a relaxed body language.
-Medium Close up Shot
The medium close up shows from the chest up and is used when there needs to be more detail in the shot, so they add more of the person in the frame.
-Close up
The close up shot is used to show facial expressions from the character and is shown mainly in tense situations.
-Two-shot
The two shot is used to show two different people in the same scene, and is normally used when interviewing people or when presenting a show with multiple hosts.
-Over the shoulder shot
The over the should shot allows the audience to be the person that is facing away from the camera and is used mainly in TV shows rather than films.
-Point of View shot
The point of view allows the audience to feel like they are there and these types of shots are used in dangerous situations to make the audience feel some sort of danger.
The camera shot used in the film/show depends on what type of genre the show is because if it is a romance, then it would most likely use close ups and panning shots as its slow and gentle which is how romance normally is. Whereas if it was action it would use a lot of wide angle shots to show the scene and the intensity of it with a lot of things happening all in the same scene.

Q1. Explain
two ways the characters and/or events fit the action adventure genre. [10
marks]
One way which the events fit the action adventure genre is by
the use of guns in the extract. There are a lot of gunshots which show the
intensity. This is shown when he is hiding behind the water fountain and shows
the bullets hitting the water or the rock and bits of rock or water flying up
which shows the danger which shows it fits the action adventure genre. Another
way is through the characters the is shown through the facial expressions from
them as it shows a bad expression showing it’s not a nice place which shows
it’s action adventure because contain scenes which are considered bad.
Q2. Explain how each of the following is used to create effect:
Soundtrack:
At the start of the extract it shows him riding in with slow music to it, and this may show the loneliness of the place (Stanford) which he's in to represent how hes's the odd one out to all the others. In the extract it uses loud fast music which may show how the people may need to act. And it may be used to express the danger at the current situation.
Editing:
The editing which is used shows quick camera changes between all of the people in the village and Nic as it shows the intensity of the situation and the strength that he has, as he has to fight them all of.
Mise en scene:
The location which is used in the film shows the old style buildings with shows and a market which might portray a stereotype for a village. The lighting in the extract shows the sun shining which make show the intensity of the situation as the heat may represent the struggle.
Camerawork:
Once the start shooting at each other, it shows close up shots of all the people which may show their emotions. This shown on the old man when it gives a close up of his face showing his anger. It also shows a low pan show and a point of view (POV) of Nic on the horse to show the power which he may have due to his rank/position and his weapons.
Q3. Discuss the ways in which people are represented in this extract. [20 marks]
The way which people are presented at the start shows it to
be stereotypical and this is shown when the old guy is walking around in a big
overcoat, wearing glasses and old clothing. But when Simon Angel says
‘Morning’, he pulls out a shotgun which shows that people are presented in a
violent way which may represent the people which might watch this sort of film.
Another way which people are represented is through stereotyping people. This shown when it shows the old man in the long raincoat or the old women on a bike with a basket on the front.

Hurt Locker Question
Q1. Explain two ways the characters and/or events fits the action adventure genre.
One way which it fits the action adventure genre is by the characters in the extract, the person reveals a bomb and they are usually in action adventure films because they portray danger as they are able to cause serious damage, and how the characters react as they act cautiously and quickly at reacting which fits the genre because it's very fast pace. This is shown as the moment when the bomb is revealed and they draw the guns at him quickly as it presents a threat to them, and also makes it so that they position in a defensive way.
Another way that it is show is through the events/characters in the area which they are in. It shows damaged dust buildings which maybe like that due to the events which has taken place which explosives and gunfire. This shown when they show an establishing shot of the setting and it shows the ruined buildings from the war which is taking place. Also near the end of the extract it shows people running for cover and this also shows that there is danger with fits the action adventure genre.
Q2. Explain how each of the following creates effect.
Soundtrack:
The fact that they grip the guns very tightly shows how the tension is building, thinking that he is going to shoot. Shouting intensifies the situation and makes the audience more interested in what will happen next. Explosions which creates fear because it makes them feel surround and isolated by the explosion
Q3. Discuss the way that people are presented in the extract.
The characters are presented by how they talk to each other, as every person shouts and this causes problems between each other. Also military people have weapons and have body armour to keep their selves protected and to keep their team protected from enemies. The setting is in a street where people are looking out of their windows. People in reality look out of their windows when there is shouting/banging or shooting. People are represented in all types of different ways during this extract. There nationality may represent the type of people that may watch this. and also tells me what type of audience my like to watch this.

Editing:
It is edited in different sections. The editing used when the bomb detonates at the end of the extract shows it to be very devastating as the explosion used is really big, and this is another way of showing the intensity of the extract.

mise-en-scene:
The guy with the bomb strapped to him is asking for help as he says, ‘Help me I’m a family man’. And this will make the audience think All of the soldiers are using guns which tells them that this maybe a dangerous situation. The setting looks like it is in an empty town, this could be because of the atmosphere which is going on around peoples home. They lighting used shows that it's a sunny place suggesting it's a place which fit the theme of war due to real life situations

Around the start of the extract it shows an establishing shot which shows the setting and can tell the audience what may happen based on the setting. They use close up shots on their face and body shots to show what they are wearing and how bad they situation might be as it shows a shot of him wearing a bomb disposal suit. It also shows eye level shots of the army people.

Edge of Tomorrow
Edge
of Tomorrow
The costume in the film is a bionic suit which allows the
person to become very strong and can hold very powerful weapons, its used because . Rita’s hair in
the film is really dirty which shows that a lot of fighting is going on as it
may be dirty from all the bits of rubble or from the explosions.
The makeup suggests that she has been burnt by all of the explosions taking place on the battlefield, it also shows that she's quite masculine . In the film there are many air vehicles and land vehicles that drops the people off, they also carry around swords with them which are supported by the suit as they will weigh a lot. The whole setting for the film is mainly on a battlefield with mimics attacking the humans, and the reason for this is because during the film they try to reset the day so keeps setting it to the start of the day, trying to set up a different scenario to win the war. But the over all setting for it is a apocolypse

Exam Question
(a) Compare how and why two programmes were scheduled on different channels
The two programmes which I am comparing are Bad Education and Miranda.
BBC produced both of the shows but Miranda was produced by BBC one which means it was paid for by the audience and Bad Education was produced by BBC Two which tells it wasn't a paid for by the audience and a private production company
Miranda is on at 22:00 on BBC Three and is normally on after the watershed because the programme has a lot of adult humour which parents won't like their children watching it so set a time based on the average time which most go bed. Miranda is aimed at 29-39 years of age as the characters in the show are the same and this is because the comedy that they use are would make that specific audience laugh the most. The Demographics for Miranda are from Semi-Skilled workers to Managers/teachers because it's that sort of age.
Bad Education is normally on at 21:00 on BBC Two and is also on after the watershed because of the same reason which Miranda is one at that time. The audience age is similar to characters as the they would use the same language and humour because they are the same age so would here, say and use the same things. The audience demographics of the show are from unemployed/students to Semi-Skilled workers.
The similarities between the two are that they are both produced by the BBC and are both on after the watershed.
