Exam Question

(a) Compare how and why two programmes were scheduled on different channels

The two programmes which I am comparing are Bad Education and Miranda.

BBC produced both of the shows but Miranda was produced by BBC one which means it was paid for by the audience and Bad Education was produced by BBC Two which tells it wasn't a paid for by the audience and a private production company

Miranda is on at 22:00 on BBC Three and is normally on after the watershed because the programme has a lot of adult humour which parents won't like their children watching it so set a time based on the average time which most go bed. Miranda is aimed at 29-39 years of age as the characters in the show are the same and this is because the comedy that they use are would make that specific audience laugh the most. The Demographics for Miranda are from Semi-Skilled workers to Managers/teachers because it's that sort of age.

Bad Education is normally on at 21:00 on BBC Two and is also on after the watershed because of the same reason which Miranda is one at that time. The audience age is similar to characters as the they would use the same language and humour because they are the same age so would here, say and use the same things. The audience demographics of the show are from unemployed/students to Semi-Skilled workers.

The similarities between the two are that they are both produced by the BBC and are both on after the watershed.

Miranda Exam Practise

"Discuss in detail how two comedy programs offer audience pleasure."

Miranda is a show which offers lots of pleasures to a certain audience. The audience age is aimed at around 30-40 years, because the age of the main character is in that age range in the episode (S1E04) it will reveal more about her.

One of the pleasures which I picked out was the familiarity and recognition between the characters in the show and the audience. This would be due to them both being the same age so will know the same things that they want. This is shown when she talks directly to the camera and talks straight to the audience which engages them with the show and makes the audience feel happy because they are able to relate their lives with Miranda’s

Another pleasure was anticipation and suspense in the show and there is an example of this when she admits to being "Amanda Barns" and waiting until it would unfold and that makes the audience excited and makes them want to keep watching until it does so it keeps the audience focused on the show. By using anticipation and suspense throughout the show makes them enjoy it because the audience will be engaged with it because they will want to know how it is going to be resolved and this links to how the audience also gets pleasure from the resolution at the end because nothing bad happened at the end leaves the audience with relief.

Another one of the pleasures in Miranda is making the audience feel more superior than Miranda and this is shown when she gets excited about the hand dryers in the toilets from one of the clips, and because she finds that appealing it gives the audience humour because they wouldn't find that exciting which shows she is less educated than the audience. The reason why it makes the audience enjoy the show is because it makes them feel higher over Miranda and can laugh at her because she doesn’t have the knowledge. This might link to the audience’s lives because it shows

The IT Crowd

The IT Crowd

The IT Crowd is a sitcom which involve 3 main people called; Roy, Moss, Jen. I know that it's a sitcom as it uses things which are completely ridiculous for the type of scene which it is. The conventions which they try to bring in a younger audience by using very childish tones for the the people that play as the characters. This is different to another sitcom such as the The Inbetweeners as they are more to reality then to what the IT crowd is by it using the same age range which are for the characters and the audience. The settings for the two programmes are different in that one is really colourful which shows what age it's aimed at and one being basic colours and dark which could suggest that it's aimed at an older audience. They are bothalso 30 minutes long.

Magazine Project

In year 10 I was asked to create a magazine front cover, contents page and a double page spread. In the end I think that the 3 pieces of work which I produced was up to a high standard especially on the contents page as it looks really professional as if it was from a really magazine.

For the all of the pieces I looked at the templates and of film magazines such as; Empire, Total Film. And I learnt from this that my audience really likes the look of dark colours as it shows danger towards the audience making them want to buy it as they like there.

Ways to improve is to research a lot about the audience which I'm aiming my magazine at so I know what I could have done to create a magazine which would grab there attention really well. In addition to that I would tried to use the same colours as over all 3 of the pieces I used a mixture of different colour schemes and it doesn't looks good as they all look like separate pieces from different magazines which means that it's not going to be attractive to the target audience.

Film Poster Project

This is one of the projects which I covered in Media Studies in year 10. I was asked by my teacher to create a action/fantasy magazine after watching to films (The Amazing Spiderman & The Hunger Games) and by looking at how they advertise the films

When making this film poster I found it really difficult to make it while constantly thinking of the audience that I was trying to aim it at. But overall I was fairly happy with the end product which I came out with as it has most of the conventions that film posters use.

There are a couple of suggestions which I could think of to improve the product, such as; improving the character image on the front cover. I also think I could have made it appeal to a female audience by adding the codes and conventions that a females would appeal to.
